THIS WEEK’S BIG MOMENT

AYRA STARR — STARRGIRL

Ayra Starr’s third studio album, Starrgirl, is no longer just a release-week conversation. The project is still making serious noise across the global Afrobeats landscape.

In its first week, Starrgirl recorded 21.34 million global streams on Spotify, placing it among the biggest first-week Spotify performances for a Nigerian album. The project also debuted at No. 4 on Billboard’s World Albums chart.

That momentum makes sense.

Starrgirl does not feel like a reinvention. It feels like an elevation.

Ayra Starr has always had the voice, the taste, and the cultural fluency to move wherever she wants. On this album, she gives every side of herself more room to breathe—confidently, creatively, and without apology.

From its amapiano-inflected energy to its Afropop, R&B, pop, and dance influences, the album shows an artist expanding her sound without losing the identity that made people pay attention in the first place.

THE STANDOUT MOMENTS

“Who’s Dat Girl” featuring Rema brings two of Afropop’s most compelling young voices together in a collaboration that feels natural rather than calculated.

“Misunderstood” is the quieter confidence moment—a reflective, guitar-led track about being underestimated. It lands differently depending on where you are in your own journey.

“Letter To God” closes the album with something rare in mainstream Afropop: genuine vulnerability.

The album also features collaborations with Wizkid, Leon Thomas, ZAYN, Theodora, kwn, and Danny Ocean. ZAYN appears on “Heaven Baby,” a track that has also built strong international momentum, including more than 100,000 TikTok uses within its first 48 hours and a peak of 937,721 Spotify streams in a single day.

The result is a project that feels global without losing its centre. You can hear the scale of Ayra Starr’s ambition, but you can still hear Ayra.

She has been a star for years. Starrgirl is the latest reminder that she is still growing into the size of her moment.

OUR VERDICT
